“There is no world without Verona walls, but purgatory, torture, hell itself;
Hence banished, is banished from the world. And world’s exile is death.”
(Romeo and Juliet. -William Shakespeare).

Make your dreams come true in your job.

Since a very young age I was attracted by Europe, when in my small country, Uruguay, relatives and family friends came back from long journeys and told about the beauty of the old continent and made me daydream.

It was just at the beginning of the ’90 that I succeeded in arriving and doing out of that account my profession.

I am tour leader and an official tourist guide of Verona and the entire surrounding territory: Valpolicella, Lake Garda, the Venetian Villas, historical gardens…

I like describing historic monuments and the natural environment, in which they are situated. Another passion of mine is the love for plants and flowers, the knowledge of their scientific names and the legends and stories around them.

My formation

I am a Spanish native speaker; I was born and raised in Uruguay, where I   completed my compulsory education. After that the study of foreign languages became my principal interest.

I attended lessons at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Montevideo to learn Italian, the language of my forebears.

I learnt English at the Anglo Uruguay Institute, where I passed the Proficiency in English Exam by Cambridge University.

For the study of the German language I attended lessons at the Goethe Institut, whereas for the French language I attended the courses of the Alliançe Française.

With all this background and the desire of pursuing new horizons in my life I arrived in Europe, in particular, thanks to a scholarship from the Goethe Institut I spent a period of time in Germany, to improve my knowledge of the German language.

But at last Italy became my final destination.

Once I obtained the license as a tour leader, I took advantage of the beauties of Lake Garda to work; rapidly conquering the trust of some of the most important travel agencies in this territory. The destinations towards which I accompanied groups of foreign tourists began to grow as the years passed, as well as my knowledge of history, art and culture improved: Verona, Venice, Milan, Mantua, the whole of Tuscany, Latium, Rome in particular, the Dolomites and Lake Maggiore, the Poets’Gulf in Liguria and so on. This way many of the monuments that I had seen in my childhood just on the postcards that arrived at home and I had learnt  from in the history books, began to unfold before my eyes.

Finally, I qualified as an Official Tourist Guide in Verona, where I also moved and for more than two decades I have been working in this sector.

What I suggest

Verona, together with Venice has been one of the first cities where I have accompanied tourist groups and I still remember the amazement the first time I saw the Arena (Verona’s  Roman Amphtheatre) at the main square of the historic centre.

Throughout the years I have got to know Verona better, to discover its secrets, its hidden treasures as well as its traditions and curiosities. Verona is a splendid mosaic of historic periods that blend very well with its urban structure. The city has an enormous charm even though it is a small city, where different cultures and thousands of tourists who wish to get to know it. Its celebrity worldwide is due to the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, but Verona is much, much more than a symbol of love. Its museums, its churches, the beautiful squares in the historic centre, that bring us back into the past with our fantasy, the City Gates from the Roman to the Renaissance period, its walls that tell the evolution of the city’s history; the Opera Festival at the Arena, its nature and historic gardens, Christmas; every season and every corner leads us to a new discovery.

To walk along the River Adige is like turning the pages of a postcards’ album which continuously changes: passing from the green hills to the shapes of the bridges along the river, from the churches and their bell towers to the colours of its architecture that partly remained frozen in time.

Because of all its historic, artistic beauty, its gastronomy, its fine wines, traditions and curiosities, it is worth visiting Verona in the company of a tourist guide who will illustrate you its history and its treasures.

A visit through the centuries and styles, a first approach to get closer to the spirit of the city.
