Are there elements of historical truth in the legend of the two lovers of Verona? What role did Dante, the Scaligeri and the Franciscan friars have? How could the story have gone in the reality of medieval Verona? Why was the legend born in the Venetian sixteenth century, in a specific cultural circle? We will seek answers to these and other questions, investigating a story in the alleys of Verona, which is perhaps even more fascinating than the legend itself. And leading the way will be Romeo and Juliet in person, with some of the most famous scenes, performed in the original language, in unexpected places!
Abstract
The visit will touch the places where – bringing the legend into a more historical reality – the meetings and clashes between families of the late Middle Ages in Verona could have taken place: everything happens around the ancient Palazzo Comunale and the courtyards through which the Scaligeri family began their urban expansion, but also in the places where the memories of secret gardens remain, where sofisticated literary banquets gave life to the legend. The tragic epilogue will take place in the shadow of the convent that eventually protected to the unfortunate lovers.
