From the 11th century a new religious building style emerges and it will be later named Romanesque. It spreads throughout the countries and “a white robe of churches” covers all Europe.

In Verona there are great examples of Romanesque architecture: the main jewel in the crown is the Basilica of San Zeno, and a gem, hidden among the buildings in the city centre, ist the church of San Lorenzo.

The façade of the Basilica, with the iconic rose window, is an example of storytelling through sculpted images. The cloister takes you back in time, as prayer and work set the pace of the monks life. Inside columns and pillars define the space and the walls are richly decorated by frescoes.

In the Church of San Lorenzo, local sandstone and brick alternate in the colorful striped walls so characteristic in Verona. Inside, the harmonious play of solids and voids strikes the visitor and the light, filtering through the single-lancet windows, accentuates the color of the different materials. The atmosphere is intimate, inviting visitors to spend a moment in meditation.
