The Arena amphitheater is certainly the best known monument: its imposing size marks the profile of the most important square in the city and even today events of international importance are held inside it.
But the Roman monumental heritage is immersed in the city: the Gavi arch, which celebrated one of the richest families of Roman Verona, is located in the historic center, next to the ancient Via Postumia which, a little further on, entered the city through the Porta dei Borsari, with its original facade. The city itself, with its regular road pattern, is a concrete sign of the permanence of the Roman heritage. And along its streets you can still recognize sections of the ancient walls, pieces of architectural decorations walled up in palaces and houses, or entire open air archaeological areas.
But nothing is more exciting than the panorama of the ancient theater which, overlooking the Adige river still crossed by the Ponte Pietra bridge, climbs the hill of San Pietro, a sacred place even before the arrival of the Romans.
